The American Academy of Sanitarians was formed in 1966 to improve the environmental health status of individuals through certification of those professionally credentialled environmental health practitioners and other environmental health professionals who, in an outstanding manner, have helped or are helping to achieve this long range goal. The Academy membership covers the breadth of environmental health. Certification by the Academy is open to persons who have attained high professionalstature through leadership and accomplishment in the field of Environmental Health and meet the criteria for selection as a Diplomate. Since its inception, over 570 professional sanitarians were awarded Diplomate status in the Academy. Five diplomates have also qualified for certification as Diplomate Laureates.
Membership categories are:
An active member of the Academy is a member in good standing whose membership fees are current. Active members are entitled to vote, to serve on committees and to serve as Directors and/or officers of the Academy.
A Diplomate Emeritus is a Diplomate of the Academy who, by virtue of his/her accomplishments in the field of Environmental Health and Service to the Academy is granted Diplomate Emeritus Status by recommendation of the Awards Committee and unanimous vote of the Board of Directors. Those Diplomates so honored enjoy lifetime exemption from membership fee payment, but have all the privileges of Active Members.
A retired member is no longer be employed in the profession of environmental health and is a member in good standing at the time of their retirement. A reduced annual dues is one priviledge of this category of membership.
An Honorary member is someone, who by virtue of his/her accomplishments and service in the field of Environmental Health, is granted honorary status by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors. These Diplomates so honored enjoy lifetime exemption from the normal annual membership fees.
